Finding an interior designer is easy. Finding one who understands how you actually want to live in your HDB flat is much harder.
A beautiful portfolio can catch your attention, but good HDB interior design Singapore homeowners can live with for years requires more than aesthetics. Your designer needs to think about storage, circulation, furniture dimensions, lighting, daily routines and how your needs might change in the future.
This becomes especially important when renovating a resale flat or planning a new BTO from scratch. Before comparing quotations, it helps to understand exactly what separates one interior design firm from another.
For homeowners beginning their search in 2026, here are two firms to put on your shortlist, followed by the key questions to ask before making your final decision.
In this article
1. Mr Shopper Studio — Best for a Highly Personalised Home
Best for: Homeowners who want their HDB to feel individually designed rather than built around a standard renovation formula.
Mr Shopper Studio takes our featured position for homeowners who place a high priority on personalisation.
Its design approach goes beyond selecting an interior style. The studio considers the homeowner’s lifestyle and preferences when developing the overall concept, allowing decisions about layout, materials, carpentry, furniture and styling to work towards the same direction.
That can be particularly useful for HDB interior design Singapore, where space often needs to perform several functions simultaneously.
Why Mr Shopper Studio Stands Out
Consider a typical four-room HDB.
Two households living in exactly the same floor plan could require completely different homes.
One might need a large dining table because the family eats together every evening. Another might prefer a smaller dining area and use the additional space for a home office. Someone who cooks daily will have very different kitchen requirements from someone who mostly eats outside.
Good interior design should recognise these differences.
Mr Shopper Studio may appeal to homeowners looking for:
- Personalised space planning
- Custom carpentry and storage
- Contemporary and modern luxury interiors
- Thoughtful material combinations
- Lighting coordination
- Furniture sourcing and styling
- A consistent design language throughout the home
Instead of looking at the living room, kitchen and bedrooms as separate decorating projects, the home can be planned as one complete interior.
Who Should Shortlist Mr Shopper Studio?
Consider Mr Shopper Studio if you want a designer to help translate your preferences into a more complete concept rather than simply execute a collection of reference images.
It can also be worth exploring for homeowners who appreciate refined contemporary interiors and want furniture, finishes and renovation details to feel visually connected.
2. RE;DO — Another Interior Design Firm Worth Exploring
Best for: Homeowners who want another design studio to compare during the consultation stage.
RE;DO is the second firm to consider when researching HDB interior design Singapore.
Before deciding whether it is right for your renovation, review its latest portfolio and look specifically for completed HDB projects that are relevant to your property type and preferred aesthetic.
More importantly, use the initial consultation to understand how the designer thinks.
Instead of simply asking, “How much will my renovation cost?”, try asking:
- What would you change about my current floor plan?
- What would you keep?
- Where am I potentially wasting space?
- How would you increase storage?
- Which parts of my inspiration images would work in my flat?
- What might not work?
- Who will oversee the renovation?
- How will additional works be communicated?
The quality of the answers can reveal considerably more than a quotation alone.
How to Choose the Right HDB Interior Design Firm in 2026
Once you have created your shortlist, avoid immediately choosing whichever company offers the lowest price.
Instead, compare the firms across the following areas.
1. Start With Your Lifestyle, Not Your Style
“Japandi”, “modern luxury” and “warm minimalism” can describe how a home looks. They do not explain how it needs to function.
Before meeting a designer, think about your normal week.
Do you cook frequently? Work from home? Host friends? Own a large shoe collection? Need space for children? Prefer watching television from the dining area?
These seemingly small details should influence your layout.
A strong HDB interior design Singapore proposal should therefore begin with the household rather than a Pinterest board.
2. Ask to See Similar Completed HDB Projects
Don’t be distracted by an impressive landed property or penthouse portfolio if you are renovating a four-room HDB.
Ask to see projects relevant to your property.
Pay attention to how the designer handled:
- Compact bedrooms
- Kitchen storage
- Living and dining proportions
- Awkward corners
- Household storage
- Service yards
- Study areas
Relevant experience provides a better indication of how the designer might approach your own home.
3. Compare Layout Ideas Before Finishes
Homeowners can become excited about marble patterns, wood tones and cabinet colours very early in the process.
But layout mistakes are much harder to correct than colour choices.
Look first at circulation, furniture positioning and how each room connects to the next.
A simple interior with excellent planning can feel significantly better than an expensive interior with an awkward layout.
4. Look Closely at the Quotation
Never compare renovation companies using the total figure alone.
One quotation might include extensive carpentry while another does not.
Compare line by line and check areas such as:
- Hacking and disposal
- Masonry
- Flooring
- Carpentry
- Electrical works
- Plumbing
- Painting
- Ceiling works
- Glass and metal works
- Installation
- Project coordination
Also ask how variation orders are handled if you change something after renovation begins.
5. Don’t Overbuild Your Storage
Storage is important, particularly in an HDB, but more cabinetry is not automatically better.
Covering every wall with full-height cupboards can reduce visual openness and make smaller rooms feel heavier.
The better question is: what do you actually need to store?
Design storage around belongings and routines rather than simply filling unused walls.
6. Pay Attention to Furniture Early
Furniture is sometimes treated as something to purchase after renovation.
For smaller homes, that can be a mistake.
A sofa that extends 20 centimetres too far can affect a walkway. An oversized dining table can change how the entire living area functions.
Good HDB interior design Singapore planning considers furniture dimensions while developing the layout.
7. Test the Communication
You could be communicating with your designer for months.
During the first few meetings, notice whether the designer listens carefully, challenges impractical ideas constructively and explains recommendations clearly.
You don’t necessarily need someone who agrees with everything you say.
Sometimes, a designer who can explain why an idea will not work in your particular flat may be more valuable.
Mr Shopper Studio or RE;DO?
If you’re deciding between the two, start by identifying what matters most to you.
Mr Shopper Studio takes our featured position for homeowners who want a more personalised, design-led interior. Its approach may particularly appeal to those who value cohesive space planning, contemporary aesthetics, custom details and the integration of furniture and styling.
RE;DO is another firm worth including in your comparison. Review its latest HDB work and use the consultation to evaluate its proposed layout, design direction, project process and quotation against your requirements.
Don’t select either company based solely on this—or any other—online list. Meet the designers and see which team understands your home best.
The Right HDB Interior Designer Should Understand You
There isn’t one interior designer that will be right for every homeowner.
The best firm for your HDB interior design Singapore project is ultimately the one that understands what you need from your space, can explain its recommendations clearly and proposes a home that works within your priorities and renovation scope.
Mr Shopper Studio is our featured choice for homeowners seeking a personalised and cohesive design approach, while RE;DO provides another option worth exploring during the selection process.
And when comparing them, remember one simple rule: don’t only ask which designer can create the nicest-looking home.
Ask which designer can create the nicest home for the way you actually live.
